FIELD / ROCK ID is a photo-based tool for people who have a rock or mineral specimen in hand and want a clearer first description of what they are seeing.
What this site does
Upload one clear photo, then review a tentative name, broad rock category, visible features, and a suggestion for what to check next. The result is meant to help you observe your specimen more closely; it is not a laboratory identification or a substitute for physical testing.
Who it is for
The tool is for curious collectors, students, hikers, and anyone trying to identify rocks from a phone or camera photo. It works best when one specimen fills the frame in natural light against a plain background.
How it works
When you choose to identify a photo, the image and any optional specimen notes are sent to Google Gemini for analysis. FIELD / ROCK ID does not keep a history of your submitted images or results. A photo cannot measure hardness, density, or composition, so those limits are stated alongside every result.
